Magicman engages in new RPE (Respiratory Protective Equipment) Fit Test training to protect the Health and Safety of staff.  

One thing we never treat as a joke at Magicman is Health and Safety. In fact, we have only had one reportable injury since 2007. We always stay ahead of the curve when new guidelines are on the horizon and are never happy just to fulfil the bare minimum to comply. 

For example, when PAT Testing of Portable Electrical Equipment was introduced, we sent staff to be suitably qualified by City & Guilds so we could ensure that only trained and accredited staff carried out such tests. Furthermore, the minimum period between tests adopted by the industry is longer than that set by Magicman. In construction, tools can be frequently damaged so Magicman PAT Testers carry out checks across the UK every 3 months. 

The Approved Codes of Practice (ACOPs) require wearers of tight-fitting respirators to be Fit Tested. This means checking that the faceplate of a respirator matches a person’s facial features and seals adequately.

For Respiratory Protective Equipment to be suitable, it must be matched to the job, the environment, the anticipated airborne contaminant exposure level and the wearer. As people come in all sorts of shapes and sizes it is unlikely that one particular type or size of RPE faceplate will fit everyone. Fit Testing will help ensure that the equipment selected is suitable for the wearer. 

As part of our continuing training program, Magicman invited Craig Richmond of 3M plc to train and certify members of our staff so we could perform Fit Testing ourselves. This included Mark Henderson (CEO Magicman Group), Steve Shaw in our first pic in dark blue(Technical Manager/Training), Chris Hayes looking like a beekeeper in our photos (Regional Manager North) and Dean Price (PAT and FF Tester Scotland/North East). More fit testers will undergo training soon.

RPE Fit Testing should be conducted by a competent person. Competence can be demonstrated by achieving accreditation under the ‘Fit2Fit RPE Fit Test Providers Accreditation Scheme’. This Scheme has been developed by the British Safety Industry Federation (BSIF) together with industry stakeholders and is supported by HSE.

Once again employing training from competent organisations ensures accreditation amongst our own workforce and competency to protect the Health & Safety of Magicman staff. Although there is currently no legal statute on periods between tests, Magicman has introduced a 12 monthly Face Fit Test regime across the whole Technical workforce which is further enhanced by intermediary testing when new RPE is issued.

Magicman are following Government Guidance on the control of the coronavirus (Covid-19) and take the health and safety of their staff and customers extremely seriously. All our technicians are checked daily that they are safe to work and we do not attend any jobs where the customer has self-isolated. When our technicians are attending, they are wearing throwaway gloves and masks as necessary.

Our call centre staff are all in the office as usual and available to deal with all enquiries and immediate bookings. We are currently trying to deal with all bookings as fast as possible and to attend and complete works within 48 hours if achievable. Our repairs are carried out with the minimum of disruption and items are often back in use within a matter of hours.
